Safety In The Sun

Keeping your baby safe in the sun may seem like a daunting task, but it isn’t too difficult with some preparation.

Here at Peek A Baby, we understand that babies enjoy the beach, playing in the sand or paddling in the sea. We have prepared some tips for you to ensure you are doing all that you can to keep your baby safe in the sun.

Find a Shady Spot

When you go tot the beach, take an umbrella or parasol with you, or even a tent! These will give a shaded area for your baby to lie or play in throughout the day.

If you are out and about with a pram, also make sure this has a sunshade attached to keep your baby safe whilst on the move.

Sun Cream

From 6 months onwards, you can apply suncream to your baby’s skin. This is often recommended at SPF 15 at least but choosing SPF 30 gives additional levels of protection for such young, delicate skin. Remember to re-apply this throughout the day to keep the protection topped up as the day gets hotter!

Loose Clothing

To try and help keep your baby cool in the heat, put them in loose clothing. Swimwear is ideal for sunny days as this is often loose fitting and breathable.

Sun Hat and Glasses

Everyone loves a sunhat and sunglasses when the sun comes out. Your baby should be no different! Find a hat that covers their head comfortably and their ears.

For sunglasses, try and find wraparound sunglasses. This means your baby’s eyes are protected and you don’t have to worry about keeping them on your baby throughout the day.

Safety in the Sun

Stay Hydrated

One of the biggest things to remember for safety in the sun is to stay hydrated! For your baby, hydration is vital! Giving them extra breast milk, water or even things like ice pops can keep them hydrated throughout a sunny day.

What to do if your baby does get sunburnt…

If your baby does happen to get a little sun burnt, don’t panic. There are a few things you can do to help with the redness and sore skin:

  • Soak a cloth in cool water, rinse and place on the red skin for 10-15 minutes. Repeat this throughout the day.
  • Bath your baby in tepid water.
  • Apply a gentle moisturiser to their skin, suitable for delicate skin.
  • Offer additional breastfeeding and water to re-hydrate them and their skin.
