Your Baby's Development & Growth

The following growth timeline is a general synopsis of the process of growth of the baby in the mother’s womb. There are some interesting pregnancy facts, but they should only be considered as a general guide. There may be slight variations in each individual case.

16 Weeks

  • Baby's nails are well formed.
  • Baby is emptying his/her bladder every 40-45 minutes.
  • Baby is about 3 ounces (85 grams) and 6.3 inches (16 cm).
  • The gender may be detectable by ultrasound.

18 Weeks

  • At this stage of pregnancy, your baby starts to grow rapidly.
  • She/he weighs about 7 ounces (198 grams).
  • Your baby is roughly 20.5 cm or 8.1 inches in length.
  • This means is the size of a sweet red pepper!

20 Weeks

  • Lanugo forms from sebum and skin cells.
  • You may be away of sleep/wake cycles in your little one.
  • The weight is now up to 10 ounces ( 283 grams).
  • Baby measures about 25 cm total length (9.8 inches)

22 Weeks

  • This week your baby has developed eyebrows.
  • She/He weighs about 15 ounces (425 grams) & measure 27.5 cm or 10.8 inches total length.
  • Your baby's lungs are starting to develop with them practicing to breathe in the womb.

24 Weeks

  • Your baby is almost completely formed and is beginning to deposit fat on his or her body.
  • She/He weighs about 1lb and 5 ounces (595 grams).
  • Your baby is roughly 30cm or 11.8 inches in length.

26 Weeks

  • Your baby can hear you and those around you.
  • Now you may feel the baby jump at sudden noise.
  • She/He weighs 1 lb 12 ounces (794 grams) and measures 32.5 cm or 12.8 inches.

28 Weeks

  • Your baby’s eye lashes are developing.
  • If it’s a boy his testes will probably begin descending.
  • Your baby is about 13.8 inches long (35cm) and weighs about 2 lbs and 4 ounces (1kg).

  • Your baby weighs a whopping 3 lbs (1.36 kg).
  • Baby measures about 14.8 inches (37.5cm)

32 Weeks

  • Your baby has put on about 2 pounds of weight, mostly fat and muscle tissue.
  • This brings your baby's weight to roughly 4 pounds and 11 ounces.
  • Baby's measurements are around 40 cm or 15.8 inches.

  • Baby is roughly 47.4cm long from head to toe.
  • Baby weighs roughly 2.6kg - the same weight as a lettuce!
  • Lungs are now mature enough for your baby to breathe outside of the womb on their own.
