An early pregnancy dating scan is an ultrasound scan that is performed by one of Peek a baby's fully qualified sonographers to determine the gestational age of the baby and how far through the pregnancy you are.
A dating scan can be carried out from 6-15 weeks of pregnancy and can also determine if you are having multiple babies. These scans are beneficial if you have experienced a previous miscarriage, experienced bleeding during early pregnancy, are unsure of your baby’s due date, or if you simply cannot wait to see your baby for the first time.
How is a Dating Scan Performed?
Firstly, on arrival, we ask you to complete a short document, so we know a little about you, all information given to Peek-a-baby remains confidential and is not shared with any 3rd parties. We do not need to see any hospital records but ask that you arrive with a full bladder if possible, this is to ensure we get a clear image of the womb. Facilities are available on-site to use once your dating scan is complete.
A sonographer will then apply gel to your abdomen and move a handheld device over your skin to see your baby. A screen will be located in front of you where you can visualize what the sonographer is doing. We check the gestational age of the baby which is determined by the measurement of the baby, we provide an estimated due date and all being well, confirm the presence of a heartbeat. If you have a fidgety baby, you may also see him/her having a little move around. Three 2D black and white thermal image prints will be given to you as a keepsake to take home, including an estimated due date. The dating scan will take 5-10 minutes to perform and is no risk to yourself or your baby.
