What is an early pregnancy scan?
Early pregnancy scans are not usually granted on the NHS but you may have one confidentially without affecting your NHS entitlement at our Peek a baby clinic in London near Croydon. Occasionally it is requested by a doctor or midwife to confirm that your pregnancy is in good physical health. It can also be performed to approve the results of a pregnancy test or just to offer you some reassurance to the couple going through the pregnancy journey that all is progressing as it must be.
An early pregnancy scan which is sometimes also called a viability scan or dating scan provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period.
Will it be an internal or an abdominal scan?
Our very early scans at our Peek a baby clinic in London near Croydon are preformed trans abdominally, but there is a possibility that a transvaginal scan is required for better visualisation. A trans vaginal scan would only be performed with the patients consent. Different sonographers will take different approaches.
What happens at an early internal pregnancy scan?
At our Peek a baby clinic in London near Croydon you will go into the scanning room and be asked to take your items of clothing off from the waist down and then cover yourself with the provided covering. You will be requested to lie down on the bed. The scan will then commence. We make all efforts to ensure that you are comfortable and well informed throughout the scan procedure.
Scared about having an early pregnancy scan?
It’s completely ordinary to feel nervous at this early time in your pregnancy especially as it is still quite an early and new stage. The point of an early scan is to try and relieve anxiety and not cause it. That is why where possible we encourage women to try and wait until they think they’re at least 6 weeks so we can be more definitive about what we see.
Are there any risks to having an early pregnancy?
Ultrasound scans have been used in antenatal care for over 30 years and there is no proof to suggest that they are harmful to you or the baby.
