A full bladder is important for certain early pregnancy scans that are less than 19 weeks along. This helps to obtain clearer images of your baby in the womb and its development. At Peek A Baby clinics, the scans that require a full bladder are:
Early Pregnancy Reassurance Scans
Early pregnancy reassurance scans can be booked from as little as 6 weeks of pregnancy, up to 15 weeks. These can help you to confirm your home pregnancy test results, the gestational age of the baby, confirm the heartbeat and give an estimated due date.
Private Gender Scans
Private gender scans can be booked from 15 weeks right through to 35 weeks of pregnancy. These are your opportunity to find out whether you are having a girl or a boy with 99.9% accuracy! If you are booking your private gender scan before 20 weeks of pregnancy, you will require a full bladder for your scan.
Please note that any of our 4D scan packages do not require a full bladder for the appointment.
We know that having a full bladder can leave you feeling uncomfortable which is why we aim to ensure that all scans are on time and there is no delay in getting your ultrasound completed for you to relieve yourself.
As recommended by the NHS, we ask that clients try to drink plenty of water 30-45 minutes before early scans to help improve scan image quality.
If you are not comfortable with having a full bladder for your scans, we recommend booking your private gender scan after 19 weeks. Unfortunately, your early pregnancy reassurance scans have no current alternative.
