Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is very common in early pregnancy. It can affect pregnant moms to be at any time of the day or night, not just in the morning as the name suggests, and some unlucky ladies can suffer from sickness all day long.

Morning sickness usually improves by 16-20 weeks, it does not put your baby at any increased risk.

Unfortunately, there is no magic wand to wave and get rid of morning sickness, each pregnancy will be different but there are some things you can try to help ease the symptoms. We have put together a few of them that may help!

  • Drink plenty of fluids, sipping little and often on water may help prevent vomiting
  • Eat some dry toast or a plain biscuit
  • Try and rest if you are tired nausea can feel worse
  • Try and eat food or drinks that contain ginger, ginger may help reduce nausea or vomiting
  • Avoid smells or food that may trigger nausea

Most morning sickness symptoms will usually subside in time, but there is a chance of developing a severe form of sickness pregnancy called Hyperemesis gravidarum. If you experience any of the following, we recommend calling you midwife, GP or 111

  • Unable to keep any food or fluids down for 24 hours
  • Feel weak, or dizzy when standing up
  • Have a high temperature
  • Have abdominal pain

As we mentioned before most morning sickness will ease off and won’t last forever. Morning sickness can get you down, so talk to your friends and family about their experiences they may be able to offer you some remedies that worked for them.
